Spell-check is a question you can ask without explaining the tool. So is fact-check. Unearned language did not have one, so the name is the question: have you smell-checked that?

People who live with a smell stop noticing it. Generated prose does the same trick. Charles Duhigg tells the household version in The Power of Habit (2012): an odor-eliminating spray that flopped until the company realized habituation was the problem, then sold the bottle as the reward at the end of a cleaning habit. Smell Check is that move for writing. Make the smell visible, then take it off. The original tale is Duhigg's. Read him.

The register leaks the other way too: humans now write like the models. Spray the prose, not the author.

Smell Check does not try to fool AI detectors. Adjacent tools make model output look human. This is a writing standard.

Earn the word. The hunt is unearned language, not a list of "words ChatGPT uses."
